What is affiliate marketing? — Earn by recommending products
How partner links, cookies and commissions work — in plain language.
Affiliate marketing (also called partner programs) is a performance-based referral model: you recommend a company’s product on your channels, and if someone buys or registers through your referral, the company pays you a commission.
Done well, all three sides can win: the buyer gets a useful recommendation, the merchant reaches new interest, and you can build online income without your own product or inventory.
How does the flow work?
Tracking is usually automated and typically has four steps:
- 1. Sign up
- Join a company’s or network’s partner program (many are free to start; some require approval).
- 2. Unique link
- You get a tracked affiliate / partner link for your blog, social, newsletter or a catalog page (like SmartMall).
- 3. Click and tracking
- A visitor clicks your link. The system (often via cookies) remembers they came from you — cookie windows vary (e.g. 1–90 days).
- 4. Successful action = commission
- If they buy or complete a valid action within the window, the company may credit the agreed percentage or fixed fee.
Why start?
- Low startup cost
- You usually do not build, manufacture or ship a product. Support and warranties stay with the merchant.
- Longer-term income potential
- A solid article can keep earning clicks months later. It is not fully passive — you still need content and traffic — but it can scale better than one-off work.
- More predictable risk for advertisers
- Most stores and SaaS pay mainly for results, so affiliates are an attractive channel. Neither side is risk-free, but spend is tied to performance.
- Usually no extra cost for buyers
- Buyers typically pay the same price as going direct — commission comes from the merchant’s marketing budget (unless a special coupon is attached).
SmartMall gathers these kinds of recommendations: AI tools, hosting and business software with tool pages. Next academy pieces cover one-tier / two-tier programs and recurring commissions.
